Like most of the people I’m friends with, I’m with her. I went out and talked with strangers canvassing on her behalf, and for anyone who knows me, you know I barely like talking with people I actually know, let alone strangers. I do believe that she would have been good for our country, but I was also probably no more a supporter of hers than I was of Gore or Obama, neither of whom did I actively campaign for. So what propelled me? I’d say at the core were two things:
- The importance of facts
- The importance of basic decency
I saw both of these things being trampled in this election more blatantly than at any other point in my life. I was deeply concerned about what the Trump candidacy exposed and what a Trump presidency might mean regarding these important values.
HRC is no longer running for office, so I’d hope that rather than eliciting a gut response from Trump or 3rd party supporters that HRC is a liar or whatever their opinion there is, that they can consider these two points.
You may disagree with me on specifics regarding gun rights, on abortion, on immigration or many others, but I don’t understand how anyone can want a world where decisions are not made informed by basic facts, where experts are not sought out for input, or people are prevented from collecting information that could empower informed decisions.
And I don’t understand how anyone can be okay living in a society where decency is not the order of the day. I think everyone (but most certainly Trump supporters) should check out Shaun King's twitter feed and see what Trump’s candidacy has unleashed. Trump didn’t create racism or xenophobia or misogyny, but he sure encouraged it to come out in force and wave its flag with impunity. I hope we can all agree that this behavior most decidedly is not making America great, and I certainly hope that every one of you who voted for MAGA owns your responsibility to stand with those of us who didn’t in fighting against this every opportunity you get.
Just as Trump’s campaign nudged this indecency out of the shadows, his victory needs to bring the decency far more of us share front and center. I do believe there are far more decent people in this world than not (and not just the majority of voters who voted for HRC) but standing in the shadows being decent is not going to cut it any longer.
